Label TextKawase Hasui Japanese, 1883–1957 Kanago Village, Ibaraki Prefecture, 1954 Color woodblock print on laid paper Kawase Hasui loved to travel, and many of his works are in the tradition of meisho-e, or pictures of famous places. Unlike earlier generations, the artists of the Shin-Hanga movement also visited obscure corners of Japan, finding beauty in little-known and unremarkable sites. Here, bright sunlight washes over a farming village 80 miles north of Tokyo, where two workers tend to the inekari, or rice harvesting, in the traditional Japanese manner. After being cut by hand, the stalks of rice are bundled and hung to dry on wooden racks.
