Label TextKawase Hasui Japanese, 1883–1957 Pagoda at Honmon Temple, Ikegami, 1954 Color woodblock print on laid paper A magnificent five-story pagoda rises above the hilltop Honmonji Buddhist temple complex in the village of Ikegami, a suburb to the south of Tokyo. Built in the early 1600s, the pagoda once allowed the temple’s monks to keep a lookout for enemies. Many of the temple’s visitors come to pay honor to the famous Buddhist monk Nichiren (1222–1282), who is buried at the site. Others come to admire its architecture, since Honmonji is one of the few temples to survive the Allied bombing of Tokyo during World War II.
