Label TextKawase Hasui Japanese, 1883–1957 Shin Bridge, Nikkō, 1953 Color woodblock print on laid paper The Shin, or Sacred, Bridge spans the rushing Daiya River near the mountain resort city of Nikkō. The path leads to the Futarasan Shinto shrine complex, dedicated in 782 to honor the region’s mountain gods. Designed in 1636, the red lacquered bridge has long been a favorite destination for Japanese and foreign tourists, and the entire shrine complex is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Until 1973 only royalty and high-ranking military leaders were allowed to cross the Shin Bridge, but today it is open to the general public for a small fee of 300 yen (about $2.50).
