Label TextKawase Hasui Japanese, 1883–1957 Yanagi Ferry, Yoshino River, 1950 Color woodblock print on laid paper This brilliant green weeping willow lends its name to the Yanagi, or Willow Tree, Ferry crossing on the Yoshino River in the Nara Prefecture. The region is famous for the cherry trees that paint its hillsides pink every spring, and a few sparkle along the riverbanks. The Yanagi Ferry was close to a railway station, and during cherry blossom season, tourists waited to cross the river near the large stone pedestal lantern, called a tachi-gata, at the center of this scene.
