Label TextKawase Hasui Japanese, 1883–1957 Kawarahata, Gunma Prefecture, 1955 Color woodblock print on laid paper Deep in mountainous and rural Gunma Prefecture, signs of autumn surround a traditional Japanese farmhouse. Racks of recently harvested rice hang to dry on the left, and the tree on the right is laden with bright orange-red kaki, Japanese persimmons. A solitary worker trudges along the path at center. The figures in Kawase Hasui’s prints are typically small and anonymous, shown from behind or with hidden faces, as seen here. Often Hasui excluded people entirely, focusing attention on the fleeting beauty of the landscape and seasons.
