DescriptionThis is a Worcester quatrefoil chestnut basket (A) with a pierced cover (B) and a stand (C). The basket is press-molded on the exterior with a honeycomb pattern enclosing four rows of yellow-centered rose florets repeated in the pierced wickerwork arches on the cover and stand rims within a gilt line at the edge. The center of the cover has a yellow "rope"-edged oval of latticework applied with blue florets. The yellow "rope" edging is repeated around the footrim of the basket and the well of the stand. The center of the stand is colorfully painted with a lush floral bouquet and four sprigs. Each piece is painted with brown and yellow branch handles terminating in colorful floral clusters. The basket has "XXVII" marked in underglaze blue. The basket has a long, overpainted crack across the base and curving up one side. The stand is married. The stand rim is in four pieces and was at one time riveted and is now re-repaired. All of the handle terminals are chipped.ProvenanceHenry Clay Hofheimer, II
